Rehabilitation refers to the process of helping a patient recover from a serious injury or illness. Patients often have to regain strength and learn new ways of completing normal, daily activities. Physical therapy, a branch of rehabilitation, focuses on building strength and mobility after disease, injury or surgery.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy treatments may include modalities such as heat, cold, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and mechanical traction to decrease your pain. These methods help prepare you for therapeutic exercise, manual therapy and functional training—such as gait (walking) training, transfer training and other activities—to work on restoring your previous level of function.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy treatments may also include therapeutic exercise, manual therapy and functional training with more emphasis on the arm and hand and activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and home and community management skills. El Monte Convalescent Hospital Occupational Therapists will assess the impact that a decline in function has in the patient’s ability to participate in their life by performing everyday tasks such as dressing and bathing, or being able to return to work or engage in previous hobbies.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy involves the actual speaking process and cognitive skills related to language, memory and problem solving. Dysphagia therapy may also be included in your speech therapy program to help improve your ability to swallow food and liquid.

I Can’t thank el monte convalescent hospital enough. I’ve been able to go from bed ridden to completely able to walk without assistance
